“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (World Commission 1978). This is the most widely used definition of sustainable development, a key theme in our conferences over the years. We, as professionals in the built environment, recognise that all physical development occurs in time and space and that this space or land is a finite natural resource which requires diligent management, particularly in small island developing states, in order to achieve their sustainable development goals.

Over the last 4 years, the surveying profession has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We lost some peers, mentors and fellow professionals during that period and we take this opportunity to remember their lives and contribution to the profession. However, the pandemic also forced greater use of technologies and innovation to remain relevant amongst our peers and as an industry, with some of these technologies and innovative ideas forming part of our “new normal.” This year, our conference seeks reflect on these key learnings centred around the theme: Sustainable Development through Digital Transformation & Innovation: A Surveying Perspective.

The conference promises to be an engaging one featuring several professionals in the built environment, surveyors and industry leaders, locally and regionally, speaking on the future of surveying; town planning; mining and drone technologies; solutions to urbanisation issues; property price indices; the effect of COVID on construction prices; land policy; and surveying trends.

On behalf of the Conference Committee, we thank you for participating in the conference and supporting our efforts to stimulate the growth and development of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean through the promotion of sustainable development through surveying.

If you are interested in becoming a conference presenter, please contact us at conference@instituteofsurveyors.com.
There have been very many positive actions of the ISTT over the years including conferences, annual general meetings, sub committee meetings, social events, amongst others. I am proud that the ISTT has continued to ensure that these activities are held despite the significant effort required.
